Instagram is constantly making adjustments to make the social sharing app, well, more social! The latest upgrade allows users to share their favorite Stories with friends by directly sending them to their inbox. Yes, that’s right, you can now share Instagram Stories through direct messages. Stumbled upon a story you know your best friend will 100% appreciate? Brighten up their day with the tap of a button. Found one that the whole group has to see? You can send it via group message by simply selecting the arrow in the corner of the screen and choosing the people you want to share it with.

Instagram Update: You Can Now Share Stories Through Direct Messages

The concept of a ‘viral’ Instagram Story is now a real possibility

Of course, if you’re promoting your business through Stories, you want as many potential customers as possible to see them. But what if you only want your Stories to be seen by your followers? Head to your settings where you’ll be able to turn off the option ‘Allow Sharing’. Easy as that. If your account is set to private, only your followers will be able to see your Story through direct sharing, just as only your followers can see the Stories and posts you upload to the platform. As with all Stories, those shared via direct message will disappear 24 hours after they were created.

What Does this Mean for Marketers?

This might not seem hugely significant in the grand scheme of Instagram updates, but for marketers, it’s definitely good news. The update creates potential for a hugely expanded reach. If you create engaging, share-worthy Stories, your followers are going to share them, and their followers will do the same. The concept of a ‘viral’ Instagram Story is now a real possibility, especially with the addition of the (relatively) recently released hashtag stickers and geo-location tags. Now more than ever, it’s worth investing some time and effort into your Stories!
