A couple of days ago model Miranda Kerr was accused of photoshopping her Instagram pictures to slim down her waist. Many of her followers reproached her for trying to look better than she already does and that the australian model had a controversial photoshop treatment.

But why? Why did Instagram users pay particular attention to something so common? It’s no secret that photos of models and celebrities are regularly airbrushed in magazines and on the Internet, so what? Is it only because the difference between the before and after photo was so obvious? Clearly not.

It’s all about authenticity

The main reason is authenticity. Instagram users are not only looking for beautiful content, they are seeking authenticity. They are not naive and they want to escape from what they see in magazines. They follow celebrities to see them as they truely are, not as they pretend to be. They do not expect perfection, they expect authenticity. They don’t like over-airbrushed photos they prefer seeing natural beauty.

That’s why they hardly accept retouched photos.

Focus on producing authentic content

Chances are you are not a celebrity and you might not feel concerned by this story. However as a brand the same applies to you.

What’s the reason why people are following you on Instagram? Because they like your product? Sure. Also because they want to know more about your brand and feel part of it. They want to see your team, your office, your products. That’s the type of content they expect, so why not give it to them?

To produce great Instagram content you don’t need to hire the greatest photographer, buy the best camera or the latest version of Photoshop. This only helps to produce more beautiful content but not more authentic. Don’t waste your time and money trying to create perfect content but rather focus on producing authentic content. Content that best describes who your brand really is and what it does. All you need is a smartphone and a good dose of creativity, nothing else.

Do you agree with it? Does authenticity seem important to you? Do you focus on producing authentic content? Please leave your comments below.
