You may be just starting out on the platform and need to grow your audience for social proof and legitimacy reasons, or you could be looking deeper into the nature and quality of your following for marketing reasons. In any case, having a good following on Instagram is fundamental for successful businesses, no matter how high your engagement rate may be.

To get followed, you need visibility. And to be visible, you may need help!

Influencer marketing has become something of a buzz word on the social media marketing scene. If you’re not already familiar with the phenomenon, the idea is to “get help” marketing your business and products from an “influential” person on social media. Influencers generally have a very large community of fans, and can choose to utilize their influence to promote products they’ve tested, in return for freebies and often a lump sum payment from the company they’re promoting for.

“Why not just stick with regular marketing techniques?” I hear you cry!

The Influencer Search Tool

The Influencer search tool is a search engine that allows you to discover and locate Instagram influencers. Instagrammers can be searched for and filtered by:

  • Location (country and state)
  • Number of followers
  • Followers/Followings ratio
  • Specific keywords in their bio
  • Hashtags they use
  • Media posted

To start searching, simply select the country you wish to find influencers in:

Then, you can begin to filter your search within that country by selecting a specific geographic area and by using the menu to the right of the map:

Your results will begin to appear underneath. You can tweak your filters at any point to update your search results.

You can then export the top 100 influencers in the generated list with the link in the blue banner at the top of the screen, if you wish to. An export looks like this:

Once you’ve shortlisted the influencers of interest to you, you can take a deeper look and assess their potential by checking up on exclusive insights such as:

    • Latest media posted
    • Average likes and comments per media
    • Engagement rate
    • Posting habits
    • Hashtag usage
    • Most liked, commented and engaging media

Searching for influencers in this way is the most direct way of getting access to the people who can really help to promote your business on Instagram. There’s also another tool on the Iconosquare platform that can help you to achieve this by approaching the search from a different angle: the Media search tool.

The Media Search Tool

The Media search tool is a search engine that helps you to look for Instagram posts with specific criteria. If you’re looking for posts with certain hashtags, you can enter your criteria into the search engine and specifically target the media you’re looking for.

“Why can’t I just search for posts on Instagram?”

Depending on how specific your search is, you can indeed search for posts directly within Instagram. Having said that, with over 95 million photos and videos posted to Instagram every single day, you may find that searching just one hashtag is throwing up too many results. You may find yourself getting lost in a sea of posts. The advanced media searching tool allows you to filter out all the results you’re not interested in, like posts from accounts that aren’t influential (with less than say, 5,000 followers).

“What’s the next step?”

Once you’ve found your ideal influencers (on paper anyway) you need to contact them and get the ball rolling! A simple, effective way of contacting an influencer directly and personally, is by sending them a Direct Message on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. If you are following the influencer, they will receive the message immediately. Just make sure you work on your wording and really capture their attention in that short message! Once the initial contact has been made, don’t be afraid to ask one influencer to recommend another. They’ll generally know (or know of) each other if working in the same area.

Getting a feel for the person offline is an important step before handing over the reigns to your online marketing. Hosting a blogger event or a coffee morning for a handful of potential influencers can really help you to get to know them individually, and allow them to get to know your product at the same time.
