Most social media managers have a lot on their plate, and scheduling Instagram posts is just one task on a very long list. I think I actually heard the sound of all social marketers around the world rejoice last week when Instagram announced they were finally making automatic posting to the platform possible. No more anxiously checking your phone waiting for a notification that it’s time to post! Hallelujah! 🙌
You probably also know that currently, it’s only possible to do this through third party tools with access to Instagram’s API (such as Iconosquare).* And it’s exclusively for Business Profiles, so make the switch now or you’ll be losing out!
For the why’s and how’s of changing to a Business Profile, check out this article. If you haven’t done it yet, you can still schedule your posts on Iconosquare as normal – just without access to the automatic posting feature.
To show you exactly how this exciting new direct scheduling feature works, here’s a quick step-by-step guide:
Iconosquare Guide: How to Schedule Instagram Posts for Direct Publishing
Before you can start scheduling Instagram posts for direct publishing via your Iconosquare account, you need to enable certain permissions (it’s really easy and takes 5 minutes!)
a) Navigate to the Scheduler section of Iconosquare here.
b) Click the green banner link “Unlock direct publishing (CLICK HERE)”.
c) Authorize Iconosquare access to the Facebook permissions.

Next, it’s time to schedule your post! Just keep in mind the following specifications when selecting and editing your photo for direct scheduling:
Instagram Images Specifications for Direct Publishing
Maximum file size: 8MB
Format must be JPEG, PNG, BMP, and non-animated GIFs
Must be within a 4:5 to 1.91:1 aspect ratio range
Minimum resolution: 150×150 (lower resolutions will be scaled up to the minimum)
Maximum resolution: 1920×1080 (higher resolutions will be scaled down to the maximum)
Videos are not currently available through direct publishing.
To schedule your post, simply return to the Scheduler section of Iconosquare, select the date and time you would like to post in the calendar (you can always change this later if you need to) and upload your image.
When you’ve uploaded your photo, select the crop/width you want, add your caption (including hashtags and emojis 🌟) in the box to the right, and hit ‘schedule’.
You should see the following message confirming that your scheduled post will be automatically shared to Instagram at the time you selected.
If you change your mind about a post you’ve scheduled, just click into the post as it appears in the scheduler, and select ‘delete’ if you want it gone for good, or edit if it just needs some final tweaking.
UPDATE: You can now also select specific posts to schedule manually (not through the auto-poster) which allows you to give you that extra bit of control over your posting strategy. if you have the auto-posting feature enabled and choose to schedule a post manually for approval at a later date, this is the message you’ll receive:
