Drop everything – you’re gonna want to read this. Instagram might be about to make another serious change to the visual layout of your feed. It’s time to think about whether you’re ready to go back to the drawing board…

Is a 4×4 grid coming to Instagram?

A test has recently been spotted by Instagram’s Beta testers which has the ‘gramming community up in arms. The test is for a subtle change to the layout which comes with big consequences. That’s right, the layout features a 4×4 grid instead of the usual 3×3.

Instagrammers who have been using the platform for a while will remember a 5 column grid on Instagram’s old webviewer on desktop. This layout was reduced to the 3 column grid we all know and love in 2015. But this new change has only been spotted on mobile, so it’s impossible to say whether the webviewer will be affected this time around.

So what’s the problem? Well, first there’s the obvious visual change. Cast your mind back to Instagram’s logo change if you’ve forgotten just how well change goes down for many users! Aside from this, some pretty major consequences may come about for many users: notably brands and influencers who tailor their feeds to look a certain way in grid format. Designs like the one below, for example, would look pretty awful in a 4 column grid….

Let’s also not forget that this change will make the images much smaller when viewed on the grid screen. This means that marketers banking on any text being legible in grid format may have to think again from now on.

All this is pure speculation at this point. However, from experience, we can say that generally these tests tend to be launched shortly after being spotted in Beta.

So how would this affect your Instagram account? Will you have to rethink your posting strategy or will it make no difference at all? We’d love to know your thoughts as well as any tips you might have to share to avoid falling off the Insta grid!

Yesterday my feed looked all scrambled for about half an hour … was showing posts of my work shared by other users … mixed in with my what I had posted … but needless to say all that carefully curated line of images so it flowed from one colour block to the next? Gone!

I freaked out just a little bit. Did anyone else see this?

    • Oh, so you mean to say that there was other people’s content (that you were tagged in) that appeared on your feed? That’s news…
